Overview
In Tanzania, Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa at about 5,895 meters (19,341 feet) and the highest freestanding mountain the world. It’s approximately 200 miles south of the Equator.
Mount Kilimanjaro can be climbed by several different routes, each approaching the mountain from a different side and offering its own pace of ascent, scenery, and level of solitude. Choosing the right route is one of the most important decisions when planning a climb, as it directly affects acclimatization, summit success rates, and the overall experience on the mountain.
The main routes on Kilimanjaro include Lemosho (Shira), Machame, Marangu, Umbwe, Rongai and the Northern Circuit. Some are longer and quieter, providing better acclimatization, while others are shorter and more direct.
